American Diabetes Month is a national campaign held every November that looks to educate the public about diabetes.  Additionally, one of the goals of this month is to encourage people to take a vested interest in their health to help slow the spread of this major health issue.  In honor of American Diabetes Month, learn more about this disease and find out how you can get involved.

Diabetes Explained

Diabetes is a medical condition where your pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to regulate the sugar levels in your blood stream.  People who suffer from diabetes often experience sudden blood sugar drops and spikes and are susceptible to other serious medical conditions as a result of diabetes.  There are two main forms of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.  Type 1 diabetes is normally diagnosed in children and is a lifelong condition.  Type 2 is the more common form and it is generally diagnosed later in life.

Your Involvement

To observe American Diabetes Month, make an effort to stay healthy and learn about your risk factors for developing diabetes.  This November, schedule a doctor’s appointment and set up a blood test that will screen for diabetes or prediabetes.  Many Americans are pre-diabetic or already have diabetes without even knowing it.  So, this month, make sure to make your health a priority.  Another way to get involved is by donating to diabetes research and support foundations.  Additionally, you can attend one of the many fundraisers and events held throughout the month.
