Maintenance Tips for Your Water Heater

Learn how you can take care of your water heater.

Most of us can agree that taking an icy shower in the winter would be an unpleasant experience.  That’s why it’s important to take steps to ensure that your water heater is in tip-top shape.  Here are some tips that you should take to care for your water heater this winter.

  • Know Where It Is

While this is obvious, you should know where your water heater is located.  Most homes have the water heater in the garage or in the basement.  Once you know where your water heater is, it’s important that you have easy access to it.  This means clearing away anything that might be blocking your heater.  Be especially careful to remove anything that’s obstructing the plumbing leading to and from your water heater.

  • Know How to Shut Off Your Water

You should also know how to turn off your water in case an emergency arises.  This is particularly important if your water heater starts to leak, or if you can smell gas in the vicinity of your heater.  To shut off your water, you’ll need to locate your main water shut-off valve.  This should be located above your water heater, most likely on the pipes that carry cold water to your heater.  Once you locate this valve, simply turn it until you feel the valve close completely.  After you shut off your water, you are free to deal with the emergency at hand.

  • Know How to Drain It

You should drain your water every year or so.  Start by draining a couple of gallons.  If that water is clean, then you’re good to go.  However, if you notice any debris or sediment, you’ll have to completely drain and flush your heater.  To do this, start by shutting off your heat.  Next, open your water heater’s drain and let all the water filter out.  Then, turn your water back on, letting it run through the open drain.  Once your flush is completed, close the drain and let your tank fill back up.  Finally, set the thermostat back to the temperature you prefer.
