October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, do you know what about the disease?

Cancer is a disease that occurs when cell replication goes awry. The collection of cancer cells keeps replicating until a tumor is formed and can grow and spread to different parts of the body which can make entire organs stop working and deteriorate other cells. It’s a disease that wouldn’t wish on even your worst enemy. October is breast cancer awareness month, and it’s time to educate ourselves about this awful disease which affects millions of people every year.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer will usually begin where the milk is produced, the lobules. Invasive Lobular cancer can break through the lobule and spread to the breast and other parts of the body. In few a cases, the breast cancer can start in the fatty and fibrous part of the breast, the stromal tissue, and can affect men, too.

Early detection and treatment are incredibly important because if it’s left untreated, it can spread to healthy breast tissue and even reach the lymph nodes. Once in the lymph nodes, it can quickly spread to other parts of your body and makes it all the more difficult to treat.

Diagnosis Methods

Becoming familiar with your breasts and knowing what is normal for you will help you detect any abnormalities. The initial sign of breast cancer may be a lump, nipple inversion, redness, dimpling, and persistent breast pain. These are all reasons to seek immediate medical help. You should perform a self-exam at least once a month.

A mammogram is a diagnostic scan which sends a small amount of X-rays through the breast and produces an image of the interior of the breasts. If any bumps are detected, your doctor may suggest you get an ultrasound. If there is a solid lump on the ultrasound image, then a biopsy is recommended. A biopsy takes cells from the area in suspect and tests them for cancerous cells. Early detection could prevent the cancer site from getting any bigger and inflicting more damage on you.
