Selecting the Right Car for Your Young Driver

Try out these tips to select the right car for your teen driver.

If you want to surprise your teen with a new car this holiday season, then make sure you are choosing the perfect car for their needs.  Not sure where to start in your car shopping?  Then here are some tips to help you choose the right car for your teen driver.

  • You might want to avoid “sporty” looking cars.  These types of vehicles can encourage young drivers to show off by speeding.  This in turn will increase your teen’s chances of getting into a car accident.
  • While larger cars like SUVs and pickup trucks hold up better structurally in crash, they are also more likely to roll over in a crash.  Because teens are more likely than any other drivers to get into an accident, you might want to avoid selecting an SUV or pickup truck for your teen.
  • Newer, mid to full-size passenger cars are good choices for your teen because they are weighty and have updated safety features.  Smaller cars don’t offer as much crash protection.
  • Look for a vehicle that has standard air bags in addition to side and curtain air bags for extra crash protection.
  • You might also want to look for cars that have safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).  You should also look for cars that automatically remind all passengers to put on their seat belts.
