Who's covered under my car insurance?

Does My Auto Insurance Cover My Friends and Family?

Find out who is covered under your auto insurance.

Do you often lend out your car for your friends and family to use?  Then make sure you know who is covered under your auto insurance in Plano, Texas.  Not sure how far your coverage extends?  Here are some of the drivers that your auto insurance will cover.

Immediate Family

Generally, your immediate family members who live under the same roof as you are protected under your auto insurance policy.  This means that your spouse, children, and siblings are all covered if they use your car, so long as they have a valid driver’s license.

Extended Family and Friends

Your extended family members and friends are generally covered by your insurance due to the rule of permissive use.  Permissive use means that the person driving your car is covered so long as you have given them express permission to operate your vehicle.  Just be aware that those covered under permissive use will have lower liability limits than a driver who is actually named on your policy.  Additionally, permissive use only applies for short and infrequent uses of your car.  If your family members or friends intend to use your car on a more consistent basis, it’s best to add them to your auto policy to ensure that they are fully covered.

If you and your boyfriend/girlfriend are living separately, they are typically covered under permissive use just like your other friends.  However, if you are living together, the situation changes.  In this case, you’ll likely need to add them to your policy to ensure that they are fully covered when they use your car.
